At the end of the rains retreat, known as Vassa (Pali) or Vass (Sinhala) observance by the venerable Maha Sangha ( monks and nuns), the devotees organise a Kathina ceremony to offer new robes known as Katina robe and other needed items known as pirikara for the monks and nuns.

Every year the Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis of the Buddhist monastic orders retreat to their monasteries and viharas for the monsoon season, also known as Vassa or the rain retreat. Kathina ceremony period is the full month following the Vassa season.
